With the 2016 Oscar night approaching rapidly and with some peculiar nominations happening this year as well, we’ve decided to look back at some of the worst movies that managed to snatch at least one Oscar nomination the year they came out.

Every once in a while, Hollywood spawns some seriously bad movies which happen to excel at one or two aspects, but end up being total failures overall. Here we have 12 of such floppy movies that somehow managed to make history by earning at least one Oscar nomination.

1. Mighty Joe Young (1998)

We are of course talking about the 1998 remake of the 1949 adventure movie, not the original. Mighty Joe Young is a gorilla film directed by Ron Underwood, starring Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron, and it was just awful.

Although this 1998 remake was pretty badly received, the movie was nominated for Best Visual Effects award, but lost to What Dreams May Come.

Mighty Joe Young grossed only $50,632,037 with a production budget of $90 million, which made this movie a pretty big box office flop due to some rather tough competition that year – The Prince of Egypt, The Rugrats Movie, Babe: Pig in the City, A Bug’s Life, and Patch Adams.

Tough luck.
