Great news for all Avatar fans around the globe as James Cameron and 20th Century Fox finally spill the beans on the release dates for four upcoming Avatar movies.

The news about the long-awaited Avatar sequels was announced via the original movie’s official Facebook page, along with a picture of director James Cameron and crew, and although it appears the Avatar follow-ups might collide with some of the future Star Wars movies, this is huge news.

The release dates are as follows:

  • Dec.18, 2020
  • Dec.17, 2021
  • Dec.20, 2024
  • Dec.19, 2025

We all know that Star Wars saga movies are becoming a staple at Christmastime every other year, so it will be interesting to see the box office battle between the two extremely popular franchises.

The Best Team In The Business

In the post disclosing the future Avatar release dates, Cameron also wrote:

Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels.”

About a year ago at CinemaCon, the annual gathering of theaters, the filmmaker first revealed the exciting news that there would be four Avatar sequels, instead of three as it was previously planned.

The original goal was release Avatar 2 on Christmas 2018, while the follow-ups would have been released in 2020, 2022 and 2023. However, it soon became clear that this schedule wouldn’t be met as Fox never actually dated the sequels officially.

Another great thing about the Avatar sequels is that each of the four upcoming Avatars will be a stand-alone movie, but will together create a saga.

Cool beans.

In case you forgot, the original 2009 Avatar managed to gross $2.8 billion worldwide and still remains the top-grossing blockbuster ever at the global box office.
