L. Frank Baum’s book beautiful “The Wizard of Oz” has been around for ages and only god knows how many movies, TV shows and other media projects have cropped up throughout the years that were either based on this story or merely set in Dorothy’s world.

With so many adaptations on the tale and so many different takes on it, it somehow feels that another one is simply unnecessary. However, this particular idea kind of seems like it could be interesting and unique enough to actually work.

A Wizard Of Oz-Centric Horror Tale

A horror story set in the Land of Oz might just be what this tale needed, and now when we think about it, it’s kind of strange it hasn’t been done earlier. At least on a larger scale.

As THR reports, New Line Cinema has obtained a pitch from writer Mike Van Waes and the project should hit the early stages of development rather soon.

Just to clarify one thing though – this Wizard Of Oz horror movie will not be the classic Wizard of Oz installment with a horror spin.

Instead, it is going to be an original story set within the legendary and magical world of Oz.

Details

Van Waes is being hired as the main writer, and although he’s a newcomer to the world of A-list Hollywood writing, his upcoming projects “Hammerspace” and the book proposal “Peeves” look promising indeed. Especially as Peeves has been picked up by Fox Animation.

As far as New Line Cinema is concerned, the studio has had some success with horror movies recently. “The Conjuring 2” and “Lights Out” were pretty successful, and they seem pretty confident in Van Waes’ skills when it comes to writing the script.

Let’s hope New Line and Waes are bringing something fresh and original to the table, and that their horror take on the “Wizard of Oz” world will indeed deliver.

We can only imagine what Dorothy, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man and The Lion will be up to and what terrors they will be facing in this upcoming horror adventure. Stay tuned.
